Princess Bubblegum from Stakes

Here is the character design I was talking about in the video I posted a couple of days ago:

Null

There's talk among hardcore Adventure Time fans about this being a hanbok. It's not. Not exactly. As explained in the video, this design came about when I combined a kimono with a hanbok. She was wearing a kimono in the storyboard (by the great Ako) and I thought it would be fun to mix it with a hanbok to create something unique to Ooo. (I thought it was cool that it reflected both of our heritage as well.) If you look carefully, the sleeves are not from hanboks, they're from kimonos, as is the waistband. Hanboks do not have waistbands. Also hanbok ties on the chest do not form a bow, they are tied to one side. Just wanted to clarify that. As to what Princess Bubblegum wearing this dress signifies, that's up to you. :)

CHAPTER 2

It was dark by the time Andy arrived at the address given to him over email. As the bus roared away behind him, a gust of wind crept down the back of his neck. A dusty breeze like stale breath, typical of the Tenderloin. He tugged on the collar of his jacket and weaved around a homeless heap smoking crack to reach the non-descript business building before him.

Interview with Gene Luen Yang

Gene Yang recently interviewed me for a series on reading he's doing as the new National Ambassador of Young People's Literature. I talk about working as the lead character designer of Adventure Time and some of my favorite books as a kid. What were some of your favorite childhood books? Was anyone into any of the books I mentioned?

TUNE
Book 1: Praxis and Allies

CHAPTER 1

A turtle and a pirate started all this. You've seen those drawings before, on television commercials and ads slipped into comic books. They were a test. Apparently, drawing a passable copy of those two characters meant you were ready for art school. At least one which only existed through the mail. When Andy Go was twelve, he picked up a well-bitten number two pencil and took the challenge. After figuring out how to compose addresses on an envelope, he mailed in his best renditions, unbeknownst to his parents. Much to his surprise -- and the inflation of his nascent ego -- he promptly received a letter of acceptance into the school, and a request for one of their salesmen to meet with his parents.

A New Era

Null

Big changes are coming to derekkirkkim.com. Starting today, I will be posting new content every single day.

MON, WED, FRI:
A new chapter of TUNE, in novel form. That's right, TUNE will finally resume serialization. I'll be posting an entire new chapter every Mon, Wed, and Fri until it's conclusion. 26 chapters in all. Don't worry, the serialization won't stall this time. I made sure to finish writing the entire novel before I started posting to ensure there will be no breaks. But since it’s being relaunched in a new form, I’ll be starting from the beginning once again. If you followed the comic book version, and you don’t want to reread the first half of the story, you can hop on board the novel version at Chapter 13. But if you have the time, I would recommend reading the novel version from the beginning. It’s the same story as the comic book, but plot points have been shuffled around, and there are some additional scenes in the novel. There are some slight changes as well, like the way Mo looks, but they are mostly cosmetic, and it won’t really effect your understanding of the story if you decide to pick up from where the comic halted and start with Chapter 13 of the novel. I’m so excited to finally bring you the second half of this story. It’s a story I’ve literally been working on since around 2000. It took me 16 years in total to finally bring it to you. I hope you’ll like it!

TUES, THURS, SAT, SUN:
On the other days of the week, I'll be posting a potpourri of content. It could be art, an interview, an article, a video, a short film, photos, or just random thoughts I would love to get your opinion on. I promise it will all be fun and informative. Speaking of informative, I would love to have a q+a day. So if you have any questions about any of my work, or what it's like to work in comics, animation, or film, or anything else I can help out with, feel free to drop me a question in the comments section or my contact page. If I pick your question, I'll use one of these days to give an indepth answer.

Well, that about wraps it up for what's coming up. I hope you'll join me daily. If you enjoy any of the upcoming posts, I hope you'll like, share and post your comments. I would love to hear what you think! Away we go!
